Pray First

praying-handsI listened to a talk yesterday by a pastor of a big mega-type church in New York City. He is a very creative and faithful leader, and I learned a lot.

He talked about preparing for Easter, and specifically about fasting in Lent.

Fasting during Lent is an ancient tradition in the church. The idea is to create more space for Christ–take time to pray and meditate instead of eating. It has appeal.

But this year, I choose to spend more time praying and meditating by putting it first, and then letting other things, including eating, come after. It is a difference in emphasis. Focus on the prayer and meditation rather than the fasting.

Either way, open your heart to Christ.
