There are all the usual cliches to say, of course. They are even true.
But they feel empty, too. Or at least I feel inadequate in saying them.
It is important to realize that none of us can remove the pain, or even really soothe the soul.
I can be with her, to share her pain so it feels a little less intense, and be as open as I can to be a channel of God’s love for her, to serve as a beacon of God’s light in the shadows of her soul. God is the real soother, the balm in Gilead.
I don’t have any magic. Just love.
